Case study details

Genpact is a global professional services firm delivering the outcomes that transform clients’ businesses and shape their future. Guided by real-world experience redesigning and running thousands of processes for hundreds of global Fortune 500 companies, Genpact is known for creating lasting competitive advantages for clients and applying Data-Tech-AI services to design, build, and transform their businesses. Specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and generative AI (GenAI) solutions, the company prides itself on being at the cutting edge of these technologies.

As the GenAI space continues to evolve rapidly, Genpact wanted to ensure it had the necessary skills and knowledge in-house to support its clients with any demands they might have in today’s AI-driven world. To achieve this, the company created a dedicated learning academy for building GenAI expertise, all built on Udemy Business.

Creating a learning program for a rapidly evolving technology

Genpact is known by its clients worldwide for its technological expertise, and it’s an organization that’s always prioritized learning. But as GenAI and large language models (LLM) gained significant traction in the business world, Genpact knew it needed to get in early and start building expertise as quickly as possible to continue meeting changing clients’ needs.

With GenAI being such a disruptive technology, the company recognized it needed a different approach to delivering learning resources.

“We needed our learning programs to continually update and evolve with the rapid evolution of AI technologies,” explains Bhavana Bhagat, Talent Development Head for Data and AI at Genpact. “This would help us not only continue driving value for our clients amidst ongoing GenAI disruption, but also enable our talent to build career resilience.”

Genpact wanted to create a dedicated learning program built on an external platform that could continually keep up with GenAI’s ever-changing landscape.

“We had to ensure that whatever changed in the industry, our courses would change alongside it,” adds Thaiyal Nayaki Sathyamoorthy, Assistant Manager of Learning and Development for Data and AI at Genpact. “We wanted a holistic, easy-to-use, cloud-based platform where we could curate our own program — all from a partner who understood the industry landscape.”

Genpact already leveraged Udemy Business to deliver learning across its wider organization, and with new content around GenAI delivered every week, it felt like the perfect foundation for its new program.

We stand on the precipice of industry transformation, and our innovative dual-track strategy — featuring GenAI Developer and Prompt Engineer pathways — empowers learners through Udemy to master their chosen domains. This not only enriches their skillsets, but also enables them to effortlessly apply their new capabilities to impactful assignments, driving a major shift in the business landscape.

A comprehensive GenAI learning academy built on Udemy Business

Just over a year ago, Genpact set out to create an immersive 12-week learning program to give employees comprehensive expertise on GenAI and LLMs, covering everything from the fundamentals to advanced techniques.

During the first eight weeks, employees participate in dedicated courses on Udemy Business related to GenAI and LLMs, with the final four weeks allowing them to apply their expertise to proof-of-concept projects.

“We had very little turnaround time to set up the program. We had to train our people in GenAI, and we wanted to bring this alive quickly,” says Bhavana. “Udemy Business helped us get started fast—we could look at the courses already live, see what made sense for our curriculum, and set up straight away.”

Dedicated modules for every element of GenAI

Bhavana and her team use Udemy Business to select courses and structure a thorough syllabus covering every aspect of GenAI. This includes dedicated modules on generative adversarial networks, variational autoencoders, sequence models for text generation, large language models and finetuning, and the intricacies of structuring and deploying applications.

Additionally, Genpact’s L&D team audits each course before putting them on the syllabus to ensure they’re a good fit. “My team members take the courses themselves to understand how difficult they are, whether they’re relevant, and whether they make sense in our program,” says Bhavana. “Udemy’s team continually recommends courses we can add to our program — it’s always evolving.”

Genpact also offers two different Learning Paths based on the skills of the employee — either pure development or prompt engineering, which involves structuring text to be interpreted and understood by GenAI models.

“We wanted to make the learning process much more democratized for people in the organization,” explains Bhavana. “The developer persona is very intense, but the prompt engineering persona isn’t. The prompt engineering track is important because we can’t always pull our research and development team into client meetings, and we want the rest of our teams to be able to address any critical GenAI questions our clients ask.”

An emphasis on Guru support and practical skills application

What’s most important for Genpact is that its developers can emerge from the intensive learning program with a strong understanding of GenAI and be ready to apply it in real-world scenarios.

That’s why the organization arranges weekly “Guru Connects” that work hand-in-hand with the Udemy Business courses on the syllabus to ensure employees have everything they need to make it through the program.

“The Gurus are true experts in the market — they’ll come in and address specific questions our people have around the course content and concepts they are learning,” says Bhavana.

Once they’ve been through the learning phase, employees can then apply the skills they’ve learned on Udemy Business in a Genpact capstone project — often based on a real-world scenario, such as how GenAI could be applied to a banking client.

“We intend to bring employees into the program and get them to a point where they’re deployable in real client scenarios,” explains Bhavana. “What’s promising is that, even for the employees who have only completed their Udemy courses and haven’t done a capstone project yet, we’re still able to push them towards deployment because their knowledge and skills are 75% there.

I was at Udemy’s user event, Forward 2023, and heard about how much Udemy is investing in GenAI. That really cemented our decision that Udemy was a partner we could trust with our new learning program.

A stronger go-to-market offering for GenAI

Genpact’s 12-week learning program helps the company build a more robust and comprehensive delivery engine for GenAI projects. And the L&D team is already seeing the results.

“When we mentioned to one of our clients that we’re using Udemy Business to train our people in GenAI, they were elated because they had confidence in Udemy as a name,” explains Bhavana. “Having those credentials on our side is already strengthening our go-to-market offering.”

The first cohort of 300 employees has now completed the program, emerging as proficient developers well-versed in GenAI and LLMs — and already solving complex client problems. For the next cohorts, Bhavana and her team will consistently adapt the program to make it more accessible, effective, and engaging.

“We’ve now established a hall of fame that tells the rest of the organization about the work our graduates are doing,” says Bhavana. “We’ve also created leaderboards that drive enthusiasm among the learners, and we’re always looking at ways to make the courses more digestible.”

We had very little turnaround time to set up the L&D program. We had to train our people in GenAI, and we wanted to bring this alive quickly. Udemy helped us get started fast — we could look at the courses already live, see what made sense for our curriculum, and set up straight away.

Keeping up with an ever-changing industry

Moving forward, Genpact’s L&D team is exploring ways to improve the program and make even greater use of Udemy Business.

“We’d really like to start incorporating Udemy Labs into our offering to give our people other avenues to gain practical experience,” says Bhavana. “We’re also using our own assessment tools at the moment, but it’d be great to deliver a single holistic platform.”

For Bhavana and her team, the key goal of the project was to start building GenAI skills fast and fill an ever-growing demand in the market. And now, thanks to Udemy, the organization is able to efficiently meet critical client needs.

“I’d advise any organization in a similar position to take the risk, get started with a reliable partner like Udemy, and trust them to get you the right content,” says Bhavana. “It’s about keeping your eye on the industry and being agile — it’s this mindset that made Genpact become one of the first organizations to launch this unique program.”

Sreekanth Menon, Global AI and ML Practice Leader at Genpact, also recognizes the relevance of this learning program to the company’s overall GenAI value proposition. “We stand on the precipice of industry transformation, and our innovative dual-track strategy — featuring both the GenAI Developer and Prompt Engineering pathways — empowers learners through Udemy to master their chosen domains,” explains Sreekanth. “This not only enriches their skillsets, but also enables them to effortlessly apply their capabilities to impactful assignments, driving a major shift in the business landscape.”
