Challenge
Scaling learning across a global workforce
As a trusted partner to approximately 95% of the Fortune 1000, Iron Mountain helps organizations worldwide protect and unlock the value of their physical and digital assets. Supporting that mission requires an agile, future-ready workforce spanning frontline operations, technology, and corporate functions. However, their legacy learning platform relied on restricted licensing, creating unequal access and leaving many employees without access to online learning.
“We set out to find a partner who could truly support our global workforce, bringing accessible, high-impact learning to all our Mountaineers across the enterprise so that everyone can continuously build skills for the future” explains Jemma Johns, CHRO.
Iron Mountain moved away from seat-limited arrangements to an enterprise-wide model that provides all their employees, from frontline operations to executive leadership, with access to high-quality learning.

Solution
Enterprise-wide and easy to access
To make learning a seamless part of a Mountaineer’s experience, the company integrated Udemy directly into its core technology stack using Okta Single Sign-On (SSO) and positioned Udemy within the company’s suite of priority employee applications — but providing access was only the start.
Having access to 30,000 courses sounds incredible on paper, but in reality, an endless library can quickly feel like endless scrolling. When you’re busy, just figuring out where to start can be overwhelming.
Empower local learning champions
To replace endless searching with clear, purposeful direction, Iron Mountain teamed up with Udemy Professional Services, local learning champions, functional leaders, and subject-matter experts. Together, the team set clear goals, established practical ways to measure success, and curated targeted pathways that make growth simple and actionable:
• Targeted capabilities: Structured learning tracks built around customer excellence, account management, early careers, and leadership.
• Tiered AI curriculum: Developed alongside Iron Mountain’s AI Center of Excellence, guiding Mountaineers from foundational concepts to advanced technical and strategic application.
• Mobile learning: Accessible anywhere, helping deskless and operational teams fit learning naturally into their day-to-day roles.
• Collaborative learning: Champion-led discussions and peer knowledge sharing that help Mountaineers translate classroom concepts into everyday practice.
“We’ve made access easy, captured real learning momentum through our network of champions, and created targeted capability paths that make professional growth feel personal to every Mountaineer, no matter their location, role, or aspirations” says Ciara McCann-Allan, Enterprise Learning Partner.

Results
Unlocking the potential of every Mountaineer
In just over six months, Mountaineers have completed more than 21,000 hours of learning, with more than 18,000 hours intentionally aligned to strategic priorities like AI, leadership development, customer excellence, operational excellence, and technical skills.
The initial AI learning pilot generated remarkable engagement, earning a Net Promoter Score of 92 out of 100, an overall experience rating of 3.7 out of 4, and a learner confidence score of 3.8 out of 4. To celebrate this milestone and underscore the vital importance of these skills, Mountaineers completing an AI pathway earn an official Udemy badge, a signed certificate, and note of recognition from both Iron Mountain’s VP of Global Talent and Learning and VP of Digital Transformation & AI.
“Unlocking the power of AI across a global workforce starts with building confidence. Giving Mountaineers accessible, role-relevant AI pathways is turning high-level concepts into daily practice, enabling our teams to integrate their learning seamlessly into their everyday routines.” Sara Long, VP of Global Talent and Learning.
Beyond the metrics, feedback from across the enterprise highlights how this targeted, hands-on approach directly boosts confidence, streamlines daily workflows, and translates learning into real-world performance. Mountaineers reported that the training was “practical, relevant, and immediately applicable to my day-to-day work,” with others noting, “Learning AI through Udemy has increased my confidence in using AI to work smarter.”
