Challenge
Connecting learning to business priorities
Zelis Healthcare is modernizing the healthcare financial experience across payers, providers, and healthcare consumers. Zelis India, based in Hyderabad, Telangana, is the company’s Global Capability Center, supporting engineering, product development, data services, and platform operations for the broader Zelis organization.
At Zelis India, learning strategy begins with business strategy. As the Global Capability Center in Hyderabad continued to scale, the Learning and Development team focused on ensuring that learning investments directly supported enterprise priorities, including AI adoption, cloud modernization, cybersecurity, and software engineering excellence.
That required targeted learning experiences designed around how different audiences need to understand, apply, and lead change.
“We start with the business priority, then identify the capabilities our teams need to deliver against it. That keeps learning focused, relevant, and connected to the work,” said Shiva Jyothi Kasaraneni, Senior Manager, Learning and Development.

Solution
Role-based learning journeys built for business demand
Zelis India translated capability needs identified through business leader input, workforce planning, and competency assessments into targeted Udemy Learning Paths.
As AI became a strategic capability, the team introduced role-based AI learning journeys tailored for three audiences:
• AI awareness: associates built a practical understanding of AI fundamentals
• Leading AI-enabled change: leaders learned to guide transformation and understand its business implications
• Applied AI: technical teams and developers strengthened engineering practices, automation, and emerging technology skills
The team also created business-requested learning paths, partnering with business units to convert real project needs into curated learning. For Payments Technology, this included strengthening capabilities in DevOps, quality assurance automation, product engineering, cloud, and AI-assisted development.
“Learning is most valuable when it is connected to the work. By translating real business needs into role-based paths, we can make development more relevant, practical, and easier to apply,” Kasaraneni said.

Results
939 active learners and 1,311 path completions
Through Udemy Business, Zelis India built a scalable learning model with strong participation. The initiative engaged 939 active learners, who logged 45,040 learning hours, recorded 1,626 unique course enrollments and 5,691 learning path enrollments, and completed 1,311 learning paths across 173 structured paths.
The team used the Kirkpatrick Model and Phillips ROI methodology to evaluate training effectiveness and financial return, with measures tied to onboarding speed, role readiness, adoption of new tools, and productivity.
“What matters is not just the volume of learning, but its relevance. We are seeing strong engagement around the capabilities that matter to the business, including AI readiness and technical skills,” Kasaraneni said.

Looking Ahead
Scaling for the future
Zelis India plans to extend business-requested learning paths to additional teams and deepen AI readiness across the organization.
“We now have a repeatable model for turning business needs into targeted learning. The next step is to scale that approach to more teams and continue building the capabilities our people will need for what comes next,” Kasaraneni said.
