Toyota Tsusho South Pacific Holdings Enhances its L&D Program to Improve Employee Outcomes
Udemy 推动实现出色业务成果
案例研究详细信息
A leading automotive company in the region, Toyota Tsusho South Pacific Holdings (TTSPH) provides wide-ranging services across eight countries. With COVID-19 related travel restrictions on inperson training delivered at their two regional training centres, TTSPH realised the need to seek an online learning solution. Through Udemy Business, the company has given staff access to thousands of L&D courses and empowered them to drive their own learning.
An L&D program in need of enhancement
TTSPH covers eight countries across the South Pacific region. They are authorised distributors of Toyota, Hino, Yamaha, Massey Ferguson and other quality products, as well as used vehicles, car rentals and petrol stations, enhancing the business model of TTSPH across the South Pacific.
As a large group operating across culturally and geographically diverse countries, TTSPH’s employee L&D program is broad and relied upon by over a thousand people. However, with primarily face-to-face classroom-based, instructor-led training, the company struggled to offer flexible alternatives to provide continuous learning despite travel restrictions.
In fact, a bi-annual employee survey of L&D requirements highlighted a significant need for ongoing staff development for employees, not just frontline and technical staff, without needing to attend the company’s regional training centers. In addition, TTSPH identified that its existing training program could only be accessed on request, providing slow, expensive and ad hoc training rather than a continuous on demand program.
TTSPH wanted to offer wideranging professional and personal L&D in a way that supported its response to COVID-19 remote working and without stretching training budgets. The company needed an online learning solution that could offer a broad range of content and support its dispersed employees’ nuanced objectives.

High-quality online training with wide-ranging topics
It was important for TTSPH to find a solution that could promote continuous learning, especially in progressive fields such as technology, office productivity, and customer behaviour. In other words, constantly changing areas that demand highly trained staff.
Once TTSPH selected Udemy Business as its online learning platform, they got to work straight away, assigning courses to support remote and hybrid working during COVID-19. “As a company, we run the risk of stagnating or continuing with outdated knowledge and practices if we do not provide staff with a source of updated training on demand,” says Michelle Morell, Learning & Development Operations Manager at TTSPH.
“With Udemy Business, we can measure success by reviewing hours of online study consumed at a country, function, and team level. We also have a Yammer Udemy Business Learning Hub where users can provide feedback and engage in the latest trending topics,” says Lisa Clayton, Learning & Development Coordinator at TTSPH.
By supporting its people through best practices, including guiding managers on managing their teams remotely, TTSPH has increased its efficiency while supporting a positive workplace culture.
In addition, Udemy Business has allowed the company’s staff to upskill selfsufficiently, significantly reducing ad hoc requests for external training. Each employee now has access to a wide range of specialized courses wherever and whenever they want. This even extends to technical training, helping teams familiarize themselves with newtechnology before it is implemented across the company.
With the Udemy Business’ mobile app and on-demand content, employees can download courses onto their devices and watch if they are not connected to the internet. At TTSPH, the numbers show that employees carved out time for learning on the go, their mobile usage is three times more than the average. “Udemy Business helps me balance daily life and ongoing learning. I can take care of self-development while I’m commuting to and from work on the train,” says a learner at TTSPH.
And the platform doesn’t just cater to pre-existing courses. In addition to thousands of Udemy’s top-rated courses across key business categories, employees can also add any of the company’s proprietary resources through an easy-to-use course builder, helping bring employees up to speed on key policies and internal tools that affect all departments within the organisation. TTSPH has uploaded its own version of its Whistleblower course to Udemy Business, helping ensure the company adheres to the latest legislation and compliance while fostering a progressive company culture.
Developing soft skills and connecting learners
Through Udemy Business, TTSPH has balanced personal development with work objectives, making learning more personal, enjoyable, and valuable to its people.
For example, through COVID-19, the company used the platform to bring people together from different countries and departments, ensuring everyone stayed connected while also developing a learning culture. “Udemy provides a wide variety of learning opportunities, and it’s always good to keep learning,” says a learner at TTSPH.
“One of the key motivators for me was finding interesting courses and sharing new things I learned with others. I always set aside time after work to do some studies. This was my development time, and I saw it as time invested in improving myself.”

50% cost savings per employee and endless flexibility
In stark contrast to its old prescriptive training program that often disrupted regular work commitments, TTSPH’s employees now have complete flexibility in how, when, and where they learn. Udemy Business also provides a “one-stop shop” for L&D courses, thus enhancing the company’s existing L&D program.
Furthermore, by consolidating training into a single online platform, TTSPH has cut its L&D invoice by more than half per employee for Brisbane based staff.
Continual development to improve learner engagement
Building on its recent L&D success, TTSPH is implementing instructorled training sessions in the Udemy Business platform to help build further learner engagement and interaction across the company.
“Rapid changes in technology coupled with the climate change imperative, is driving unprecedented rates of change in our industry. If we don’t ensure our employees are continually updating their skills, we will lose our competitive advantage as an organisation and risk becoming the next Kodak,” says Tom Harmer, Group HR Manager at TTSPH.
