사례 연구 세부 정보
msg global solutions provides SAP-based systems integration, software development, and application managed services to countless businesses across diverse industries. And with a global network of highly skilled software engineers and consultants, the company prides itself on delivering future-focused solutions using the latest technology.
But outdated processes — and cost-inefficient in-person training — meant the company struggled to offer a consistent Learning and Development (L&D) experience to its people. msg looked to Udemy Business for an online learning solution, helping its 1,300+ employees access the latest technical and soft skills, nurturing a learning culture.
A growing, dedicated team with a thirst for knowledge
Part of the wider msg group, msg global solutions is the group’s international arm specializing in SAP-focused system integration and IT consultancy and software development. As a SAP technology and software development expert, the company also co-develops projects with SAP, leveraging its globally distributed network of engineers and consultants.
With such a highly skilled workforce, msg global takes Learning and Development (L&D) seriously. In fact, the company has its own “Center of Competence Knowledge and Education”, which acts as a service provider to the wider company, offering internal SMEcreated training content based on department-level demand.
Leading the unit is Harald Kienegger, Global Head of Knowledge and Education at msg global solutions. As a learning promoter, his role is to matchmake the right learning solutions to employees’ needs. But as he explains, aging company processes were restricting L&D growth: “As a fast-growing company, we suddenly found our old L&D practices — such as training materials on SharePoint — were no longer appropriate. And while the company had a lot of technical skills knowledge, we had a lot of soft skills gaps.”
Moreover, msg global relied on on-site, instructor-led training that consumed significant time, money and resources due to the distances people had to travel and the time they had to take out of their day-to-day roles as a result. What’s more, by moving to a blended learning approach using a combination of instructor-led training and Udemy Business, msg global was able to reduce the time to train and onboard employees by 20%.
As COVID-19 remote working further dispersed msg global’s workforce, combined with a training needs analysis that highlighted gaps in the company’s training resources, it was clear to Harald that a comprehensive online training platform was the only solution.

L&D customized to employee needs — across every department
While part of the company already used LinkedIn Learning for ad hoc training courses, Harald and his team decided to evaluate 15 different online learning providers — including Coursera and Pluralsight — eventually choosing Udemy Business. “Udemy Business is outstanding because it matches our requirements, and crucially unlike other vendors, covers SAP courses,” says Harald. “Udemy Business also works as a marketplace, meaning the latest versions of every technical certification course are available, helping us stay ahead of our customers’ needs.”
Key to msg global’ s vendor evaluation, and the ultimate success of its strategy, was involving its employees at each stage of the decision process and using representatives from each department to trial the platform. “It wasn’t just about training, it was also about employee retention and satisfaction and brand integrity,” explains Harald. “Udemy created a company communication plan that contained useful promotional material and even provided onboarding experts for our employees.
“Life-long learning is a crucial success factor for msg global solutions. We decided to provide Udemy Business for all our colleagues to allow everyone to grow professionally and personally. In our business context, knowledge is essential for our company’s success. The learning portfolio of Udemy Business helps us to address our customer’s business needs more effectively and demonstrates msg global’s commitment to learning,” says Peter Umscheid, CEO of msg global solutions
Up-to-date data to help anticipate changing operational demands
With so many different operational demands on the company at any time, msg global needs complete oversight over what its people are learning and want to learn in the future, so it can match its learning programs to client needs. Harald and his team now have access to unique insights into skills gaps and even popular trends across different geographies.
For example, Udemy’s dashboard shows the most popular topics studied, helping msg global’ s L&D team understand critical cultural and demographic differences and making its onboarding and general training more localized and relevant. This information also allows Harald to identify any previously undiscovered regional training needs, ensuring employees benefit from a more nuanced L&D program.
Countless benefits beyond the obvious
While there are clear cost benefits for msg global through adding on-demand training, Harald explains the most critical benefits are more strategic: “Our people recognize Udemy Business as an investment in them; they call it a ‘game changer’. Our blended learning approach has helped us streamline our onboarding efficiency.”
“We can now upskill our people faster than we could have done on our own, which helps us react to market demand quicker and gain a competitive advantage. We also believe that investing in people’s education positively impacts retention,” adds Harald.

Boosting L&D performance across the group
Having seen msg global solutions achieve such positive results with its L&D program, various arms of the wider msg Group are now investigating how they can apply Harald’s achievements to their own global teams.
Harald has even created an msg L&D exchange network to transfer his knowledge and best practices to other similarly minded learning professionals. “After hearing of our success, the demand for us to showcase our work with Udemy Business across msg global is huge,” says Harald. “It’s proved to us we did the right thing, and it shows the success of our learning culture. I see part of my responsibility is to now transfer best practices across the business as an L&D ambassador.”
