Indra makes the world go ‘round — literally. The global technology and consulting company has transformed how people get from A to B, whether it’s on the ground or in the air. But not only that, because Indra is a world-leader in providing proprietary solutions in specific segments in Transport and Defense markets, and a leading firm in Digital Transformation Consultancy and Information Technologies in Spain and Latin America through its affiliate Minsait. Like so many other organizations, Indra’s future relied heavily on the skills, knowledge, and capacity of their workforce. And in 2018, they trusted Luz Santillana Romero Development and Engagement Director, to oversee employee learning programs.

Respond to the widening global skills gap

With 49,000 employees distributed across 46 countries, Indra has the monumental task of developing a learning strategy that works across time zones, languages, and cultures. “Since 2018, our learning strategy has fueled the cultural transformation of Indra,” says Santillana. “Through our transformation, we’re working to put the employee in the center of the company.”

Their learning and development strategy aims to accomplish three goals: develop Indra’s professionals, ensure their employability, and provide them with the tools they need to perform and grow their careers.

But when the advance of new technologies and economic transformation accelerated, Santillana’s team took a leading role to incorporate the new skills required into the company. Suddenly they didn’t just need a workplace learning solution that scaled with their large and globally distributed employee base — they needed one that kept up with the pace of change at Indra and the world at large.

“We looked at other solutions. But Udemy ultimately empowers professionals to lead their own development and constantly updates their content to meet our employees’ needs — even in their native language.”

A learning platform that responds to rapid change on a global scale

The core objectives of Indra’s learning and development program are three-fold: Make employees responsible for learning, enable more collaboration and contribution to the company, and constantly evaluate best practices to ensure innovation.

“The reason we decided to adopt Udemy Business was to help meet those objectives,” says Santillana. “We looked at other solutions. But Udemy ultimately empowers professionals to lead their own development and constantly updates their content to meet our employees’ needs — even in their native language.”

Breakdown language barriers for international learners

Indra is a global company, meaning it doesn’t just serve customers around the world — its workforce is distributed across 46 countries. “Learning is core to Indra’s business strategy,” says Santillana. “This cultural transformation needs to happen at a global scale in order to be successful.”

Udemy Business stood out to Indra in this aspect. Although the 6,000 (and counting) courses available on the platform covered topics employees needed to learn, the growing number of courses in International Collection spoke their language.

“Since rolling out Udemy Business in 2018, 75% of Indra employees have used Udemy to gain new skills,” Santillana says. “The high level of engagement has been reinforced by the courses available in languages other than English.”

Udemy Business’ International Collection is taught by native-speaking subject matter experts in German, French, Portuguese, Japanese, and Spanish. Topics like Design Thinking, Blockchain, and Artificial Intelligence with Python in Spanish have been popular at the company’s headquarters in Madrid.

Put learning at the center of workplace culture

For a technology company based on knowledge and innovation such as Indra, it’s vital for their workforce to keep pace with technological advancements. This was a challenge for Indra’s learning team. Without the deep technical expertise to anticipate the latest topics and trends, Santillana wanted to empower teams to tailor their learning experience to their specific needs.

With Udemy’s customized learning paths, team leaders at Indra can guide employees on a learning journey. And because anyone can create a learning path, everyone at Indra can take the lead on learning — even when they’re thousands kilometers apart from one another.

“One person in Brazil can build a learning path and share it with another person in other parts of the world at Indra,” says Learning and Development Specialist Blanca Ramos. This culture of growth and professional development allows Indra to confidently stay ahead of the technological curve.

Close the skills gap and continue innovating tomorrow

Indra employees needed to gain new skills and knowledge quickly. With this goal in mind, Santillana knew a flexible approach to learning — one that enabled employees to engage on any device when it was convenient for them — would be a priority.

The Udemy Business mobile app puts over 6,000 specialized, ondemand courses in the hands of Indra employees. And because course content is added as new skills and demands emerge, teams could truly “lead their own learning.”

This type of self-driven learning adds value to the company’s internal expertise, ultimately making them more competitive than ever. “Udemy responds to the needs of the business in an agile and global manner,” says Santillana. “It’s truly the best solution for our employees and their careers.”
