Yet while these strengths inspired Dr. KimLoan Tran to join the company in 2019 as Chief Learning Officer, she knew she had her work cut out for her when it came to revitalizing TIBCO’s approach to employee learning.

Challenge: Corporate learning culture hindered by LMS complexity

From her first day at TIBCO, KimLoan could tell there was ample opportunity to refresh the company’s Learning & Development program. “We offered little in the way of formal employee development, and we needed a stronger focus on building credibility and relationships across the business,” she recalls.

By the time KimLoan came on board, the company had implemented four different Learning Management Systems (LMS), all of which were owned by different departments, as well as numerous contracts with content vendors. The result was both overwhelming and overly complicated for employees. “They found it confusing and time-consuming to navigate—and when they did find useful content, the quality was inconsistent across platforms, ” she states. “Furthermore, none of the existing LMS vendors offered a broad range of technical skills, soft skills, and leadership development content all in one place. TIBCO clearly needed a fresh take.”

Solution: Udemy Business stands out as a true technology partner

TIBCO L&D team cast a wide net among major players in online learning platforms, from Pluralsight and LinkedIn Learning to Open Sesame. “But it was Udemy Business that really drew our attention,” recalls KimLoan. “In addition to the innovative technology and quality content, the relationship and experience element came into play. TIBCO and Udemy Business were focused on achieving similar outcomes.”

KimLoan gives huge credit to her Udemy sales partner, not only for helping the team best understand the solution, but for working directly with them to pave the way for executive support. “We collaborated to create a solution that would accelerate the new corporate learning culture,” says KimLoan.
